Project Royal Caribbean International Ltd
Location Brilliance of the Seas Cruise Ship
Client's Brief
The Brilliance of the Seas is the sister ship to Radiance of the Seas. Stephenjohn Design were set the task to expand on the success of the African theme of the first ship without amendments to the budget. As the centre piece of the original design was three 5.5m high African Elephants, it was felt that simple modifications could be made to adapt the scheme to an Indian theme. By changing the ear size and shape, manipulating the artwork budget, the design perception was changed from the African continent to the Indian continent.
The waterfalls between the elephants spill over into the clear aquamarine pool passing under an arched wooden bridge. Two islands appear on plinths in the pool and visitors are invited to swim over to sit with the two kneeling baby elephants. The whole area is drenched in planting at low and high levels, supported by stone and wooden Indian pillars, to complete the exotic Indian experience. The whirlpool opposite the elephants is positioned in an elevated shaded position and is an excellent place to lie back and view the area while being gently massaged by the water jets.
Approach To Design
The Indian theme translates well into the health spa. In the carpeted reception a magnificent stone relief of the Taj Mahal greets the passengers on the far wall. The spectacular artwork continues through into the hair and beauty salon. Behind the dryers is a full width terracotta stone relief of a tea plantation subtly coloured with rich hues associated with Indian spice markets.
In the Salon there are eight styling positions, four shampoo basins, six drying positions and a manicure station. It has it's own reception desk for clients to make reservations. The finishes are black granite worktops, Brazilian rosewood floor with inset border of various colours.
The facility also has a Rasul and a prestigious thermal suite with exotic tiling and detailing. The thermal suite comprises a dry sauna, a mild steam and an aromatic chamber. There are five heated relaxation loungers and two snail showers. With 18-treatment room catering for both wet and dry treatments the spa has the capacity of a destination spa with the added advantage of a changing destination. Furthermore the spa is operated by Steiner Leisure, the parent company of the Elemis Brand and therefore has the exotic menu to match the exotic interior.
